Foreword, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2

The purpose of Book Club is to help us all understand what we read on a deeper level.  We want to dissect the happenings of the story and see how it applies to our lives, and see how history has shaped our current world.

  • What was the most impactful part of each chapter to you?  Explain why.
  • List all possible examples of "deafness of the mind" you found in the chapters (hint:  there are at least 11)
    • Categorize your examples as either "Naive", "Ignorant," or "Arrogant."
  • Explain the symbolism of Clerc's quote about  coming out of the cave's into the light.
    • What is the literal meaning?  What is the figurative meaning?
  • Explain the meaning behind Jean Massieu being a "shepherd & symbol."
  • Chose two of the questions posed to Massieu on pages 19-22  (ie  "What is hope?" "What is time?").  How would you have answered those questions?
    • Remember you can't define a word using the word or synonyms of it.
